This course is designed to introduce and develop the fundamental skills required for paddlesport in a surf environment, with a focus on safety, awareness, and effective technique in small surf conditions.

Description
The Surf Kayak Award Assessment is designed to introduce and develop the essential skills required for paddling in a surf environment. Delivered in line with Paddle Wild guidance, this practical course focuses on building confidence, safety awareness, and effective technique in small, manageable surf conditions.
Set within a supportive and dynamic coastal environment, participants will gain hands-on experience both on the beach and in the water. The course combines safety briefings, skill development, and real-time practice to help paddlers understand how to operate effectively in waves.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic surf awareness, including wave patterns, tides, and safe conditions

- Participants should arrive prepared for a full day in a coastal environment.
Pre-course Requirements
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, participants should:
- Be comfortable paddling on sheltered water
- Have basic boat control skills (e.g. forward paddling, turning, stopping)
- Be confident in and around water, including the ability to swim
- Be physically capable of managing equipment in a beach and surf environment.
Personal Requirements
Participants should arrive prepared for a full day in a coastal environment:
Essential:
- Suitable craft and paddle
- Buoyancy aid (minimum 50N)
- Helmet (recommended, may be required depending on conditions)
- Appropriate immersion clothing (e.g. wetsuit)
- Suitable footwear.
Recommended:
- Spraydeck (where applicable)
- Towline (if owned)
- Warm layers and windproof clothing for shore-based sessions
- Food, refreshments, and drinking water
