Ready, Confident, and Prepared

Preparing well for your expedition is one of the most important steps towards having a safe, enjoyable, and successful experience. Whether you are taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, an inclusive outdoor journey, or an adventure programme, this page is designed to help you feel confident and ready before you arrive.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate, learn, and thrive in the outdoors. Good preparation helps create a more inclusive experience for everyone and allows you to focus on enjoying the journey, supporting your team, and achieving your goals.

Before You Attend

There are several things you can do before your expedition to help ensure you are fully prepared:
  • Read all joining instructions carefully
  • Check your personal kit and clothing
  • Ensure your equipment is suitable and fits comfortably
  • Familiarise yourself with your route and programme requirements
  • Discuss any support needs, medical information, or accessibility requirements with your leader
  • Practice using your equipment before the expedition, where possible
  • Build confidence in basic expedition skills such as packing, navigation, campcraft, and outdoor cooking.

Preparation helps create a safer and more inclusive experience for everyone involved.

Understanding Expedition Expectations

Every expedition has its own aims and learning outcomes. Depending on your programme, you may be working towards an award, developing outdoor skills, building confidence, or simply enjoying time in nature.
Participants are encouraged to:
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate responsibility and independence
  • Respect the natural environment
  • Support fellow team members
  • Make informed decisions throughout the journey
  • Contribute positively to an inclusive and supportive group culture.

Your instructors and assessors are there to support your learning and development throughout the experience.

Planning Your Team Goal

Many expeditions include a shared team goal or project. A team goal provides a focus for your journey and encourages creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Your goal could involve:
  • Wildlife observation
  • Environmental awareness projects
  • Photography
  • Mapping and navigation studies
  • Local history research
  • Creative writing or storytelling
  • Outdoor wellbeing and mindfulness activities
  • Art, music, or nature-inspired projects.

The most successful team goals are those that engage all participants and provide opportunities for everyone to contribute inclusively. Discuss your ideas with your team before the expedition and ensure your goal is agreed upon with your expedition leader.

Inclusive Participation

We recognise that every participant brings different strengths, experiences, and support needs.

If you require adjustments or additional support, please let us know as early as possible. This may include:
  • Equipment adaptations
  • Dietary requirements
  • Communication preferences
  • Medical considerations
  • Learning support needs
  • Mobility considerations.

We aim to work collaboratively with participants to create inclusive adventures that enable everyone to participate as fully as possible.

Capturing Your Experience

Many teams enjoy recording their expedition through photographs, notes, sketches, audio recordings, or journals. If your project requires photography or digital recording, remember to:
  • Bring suitable charging equipment if permitted
  • Follow any expedition phone or device policies
  • Respect privacy and safeguarding guidelines
  • Ensure technology supports, rather than distracts from, the expedition experience.

Some programmes may restrict mobile phone use during activities to encourage teamwork, navigation skills, and engagement with the outdoor environment.

Preparing for Success

A successful expedition is not about being the fastest or carrying the most equipment. It is about working together, overcoming challenges, learning new skills, and enjoying the journey.

By arriving prepared, supporting your team, and embracing new experiences, you will give yourself the best opportunity to gain confidence, develop resilience, and create lasting memories.

We look forward to welcoming you on your next inclusive adventure.

Ready for Adventure

Good preparation helps turn challenges into opportunities for learning, achievement, and enjoyment. By working together, developing skills, and planning, participants can feel confident, capable, and ready to make the most of their expedition experience.

We believe inclusive preparation creates inclusive adventures, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and succeed.
