The Scottish Highlands provided a beautiful backdrop for a memorable weekend of adventure, connection and shared experiences as Equal Adventure welcomed The Not Forgotten and a wonderful group of veterans for an inclusive outdoor adventure weekend.
Surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Cairngorms, the weekend was an opportunity to step outdoors, try new activities, build connections and experience the freedom and enjoyment that accessible outdoor adventures can offer. From canoeing on the water to archery and hiking in the surrounding landscape, the programme brought everyone together through a shared love of adventure.
Most importantly, it was a chance for everyone to participate in their own way, explore new possibilities and create lasting memories in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Making Outdoor Adventure Accessible to Everyone
At Equal Adventure, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the outdoors, regardless of their physical abilities or individual support needs.
Outdoor activities can offer so much more than simply getting outside. They create opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, challenge personal boundaries and connect with others. However, accessing these experiences is not always straightforward, and the right equipment, adaptations and support can make a significant difference.
Throughout the weekend, our focus was on creating an environment where participants could feel comfortable exploring activities, discovering what worked for them and getting involved in ways that suited their individual needs.
Every participant brought their own experiences, abilities and perspectives. By taking a flexible and inclusive approach, we could help make the activities more accessible and encourage everyone to enjoy the experience at their own pace.
For us, inclusive adventure is about more than adapting equipment. It is about understanding individual needs, removing barriers wherever possible and creating opportunities for people to take part, make choices and enjoy the experience alongside others.
Canoeing, Archery and Exploring the Highlands
The weekend featured a fantastic mix of outdoor activities, each offering a different way to experience the natural beauty of Cairngorms and its surroundings.
Getting Out on the Water
Canoeing offered participants the opportunity to experience Cairngorms from a different perspective, surrounded by the peaceful waters and breathtaking Highland scenery.
Getting out on the water can be an incredibly rewarding experience. It combines the excitement of adventure with the opportunity to appreciate the landscape, work together and enjoy time outdoors.
With appropriate support and adaptive equipment, water-based activities can become more accessible to people who might otherwise face barriers to participation. Creating these opportunities helps demonstrate how thoughtful adaptations can open the door to experiences that everyone should have the chance to enjoy.
Trying Something New with Archery
Archery brought another exciting element to the weekend, giving participants the opportunity to try a different activity, develop their skills and enjoy the challenge of aiming for a target.
Activities like archery can be adapted to accommodate different abilities and support requirements. With the right approach, equipment and guidance, participants can explore new skills and experience the satisfaction that comes from taking part.
Trying something unfamiliar can also be a valuable confidence-building experience. Whether it is a first attempt or an opportunity to develop an existing interest, the emphasis was on participation, encouragement and enjoying the moment.
Exploring the Outdoors Through Hiking
The group also had the opportunity to enjoy hiking and spend time exploring the beautiful surroundings of the Scottish Highlands.
Being outdoors offers space to slow down, take in the scenery and enjoy the benefits of spending time in nature. Sharing these experiences with others can make them even more meaningful, creating opportunities for conversation, encouragement and connection along the way.
Inclusive outdoor experiences recognise that everyone may approach an activity differently. By considering individual needs and providing suitable support, we can help more people enjoy the landscape and participate in outdoor adventures in ways that work for them.
The Importance of Adaptive Equipment and the Right Support
One of the key messages from the weekend was the difference that the right support and adaptive equipment can make.
At Equal Adventure, we work to develop and provide equipment that helps people access outdoor environments and activities that may otherwise be difficult to reach. Our approach recognises that there is no single solution that works for everyone.
Different people have different requirements, and successful inclusion often comes from combining suitable equipment with thoughtful planning, practical adaptations and a supportive team.
This was an important part of the weekend at Glenmore Lodge. By focusing on what participants could do, rather than the barriers they might face, we helped create opportunities for everyone to get involved and experience the activities together.
Accessible equipment is not simply about making an activity possible. It can also help people feel more confident, independent and comfortable while participating. When barriers are reduced, the focus can shift towards the experience itself: enjoying the water, trying a new skill, exploring the landscape and spending quality time with others.
These are the experiences that make inclusive adventure so valuable.
More Than Adventure: Building Connection and Confidence
While the activities were a major highlight, the weekend was about much more than canoeing, archery and hiking.
Bringing people together in an outdoor setting creates opportunities for shared experiences, new friendships and meaningful connections. Taking part in activities as a group encourages people to support one another, celebrate achievements and enjoy the experience together.
For veterans, opportunities to participate in inclusive outdoor activities can provide a valuable setting for social connection, exploration and trying something different. Every individual's experience is unique, and creating welcoming environments where people can participate in their own way is an important part of making these opportunities meaningful.
Whether it was enjoying the surroundings, taking on a new challenge or simply spending time together, the weekend celebrated the value of shared experiences and the positive role that accessible adventure can play.
We were delighted to see participants getting involved, exploring different activities and making memories throughout the weekend. These moments are a reminder that adventure does not have to look the same for everyone. What matters is creating the opportunity for people to take part, enjoy themselves and feel included.
Working Together to Create Inclusive Opportunities
We are incredibly grateful to The Not Forgotten for partnering with us and helping make this special weekend possible.
Collaboration is essential to creating more inclusive outdoor experiences. By bringing together organisations, expertise, equipment and support, we can work towards removing barriers and expanding opportunities for people to enjoy activities in the natural environment.
We would also like to thank every participant who joined us, along with everyone who contributed to making the weekend welcoming, enjoyable and memorable.
It was a pleasure to bring everyone together at Glenmore Lodge and share a weekend filled with outdoor experiences, laughter, exploration and connection.
Looking Ahead: More Opportunities for Inclusive Adventure
At Equal Adventure, our commitment to inclusive adventure continues beyond a single weekend or event.
We want to help create a future where access to outdoor activities is not limited by physical barriers or a lack of suitable equipment. By working alongside individuals, organisations and activity providers, we aim to support more people in discovering the enjoyment, confidence and independence that accessible outdoor experiences can offer.
Weekends like this one demonstrate what can be achieved when inclusion is at the heart of planning and delivery. They remind us of the importance of listening to individual needs, finding practical solutions and making space for everyone to participate.
Every opportunity to get outdoors, try something new or share an experience with others is a step towards a more accessible and inclusive adventure community.
We look forward to continuing this work and creating more opportunities for people to explore, connect and experience the outdoors together.
Thank you to The Not Forgotten and everyone who made our Glenmore Lodge adventure weekend so special. We are proud to champion inclusive outdoor experiences and look forward to many more adventures ahead.
