    Who is course for?

The EA Champions course is primarily designed for people becoming or developing as EA Champions.

It is particularly relevant for people who:

    • Have completed the EA Volunteer course
    • Are already involved with Equal Adventure
    • Want to support inclusive outdoor participation
    • Want to help their community identify and develop opportunities
    • Want to encourage disabled and non-disabled people to participate together.

The course can also be completed separately or alongside volunteer learning, depending on the individual's role and experience.

    Green, Blue & Yellow

EA Champions support opportunities across different outdoor environments:

🟢 Green - Land, nature and green spaces.

    🔵 Blue - Water-based activities and experiences.

🟡 Yellow - Beaches and coastal environments.

These environments provide opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to participate together and experience outdoor activities that may be restorative, potentially therapeutic or habilitative.

    01

    Community-Led, Not Practitioner-Led

At the heart of EA Champions is the belief that communities should help shape the opportunities that affect them.

Rather than professionals deciding what people need, the EA Champions approach asks:
    What matters to this community?
    What are people interested in?
What opportunities would they like to explore?
How can we support them to make it happen?

    This means:
    • Communities identify their priorities
    • Local people help shape activities
    • Lived experience is valued
    • Disabled and non-disabled people can contribute together
    • Practitioners support and enable rather than take control
    • Opportunities are shaped around real community aspirations.

    02

The Role of an EA Champion?

Being an EA Champion is about more than helping to deliver an activity.
Champions can act as a link between people, communities and opportunities.

    An EA Champion can:
    • Listen - Understand what people want and what matters to them

    • Inspire - Encourage people to recognise possibilities and get involved

    • Identify - Spot opportunities that reflect local interests and aspiration

    • Connect - Bring people together with activities, groups, organisations and resources

    • Enable - Support communities to develop their own opportunities.

    • Amplify - Help community voices and experiences be heard

    • Champion - Promote inclusion, choice and participation.

    03

    The EA Champions Philosophy

    The philosophy is simple:

The community knows its aspirations. Our role is to listen, enable and support.

Success is not only about how many activities are delivered.

    It is also about whether:
    • People feel listened to
    • Communities have a genuine voice
    • People can influence what happens
    • New opportunities develop from community ideas
    • Disabled and non-disabled people can participate together
    • People experience opportunities that may previously have felt unavailable.

    04

    What will you explore?

Throughout the course, you will explore:

    • Community-led practice - Understanding how communities can shape their own opportunities.

    • Lived experience - Recognising the value of people's experiences, knowledge and aspirations.

    • Inclusion & participation - Supporting disabled and non-disabled people to participate together.

    • Outdoor opportunity - Exploring possibilities across Green, Blue and Yellow environments.

    • Inspiration & connection - Helping people discover activities, relationships and opportunities.

    • The Champion mindset - Learning when to listen, when to encourage and when to enable.

    05

    The Champion Mindset?

As you move through the course, consider:

    What are people telling us?

    What matters to this community?

    What possibilities already exist?

What new opportunities could be created?

Who could help make them happen?

How can I support without taking over?

These questions help turn the principle of “Nothing about me without me” into practical action.

    06

    From Possibility to Participation

An EA Champion helps create the conditions for people and communities to move from:

    ASPIRATION → POSSIBILITY → CONNECTION → OPPORTUNITY → PARTICIPATION

The Champion does not have to have all the answers.

The role is to listen, connect, encourage and enable.

Together, we can help communities shape the adventures they want to experience.

    • Listen
    • Inspire
    • Connect
    • Enable
    • Champion inclusion.
